Stephen Powers x Roskilde

With the task of painting a 330-foot-long grandstand that represents the overall theme of this years Roskilde Music Festival, artist Steven Powers discusses his process and challenges for this particular project. Powers also speaks on the difference of connecting with people being an artist opposed to being a musician. The Festival located in Roskilde, Denmark features large musical acts like Bjork, The Cure, Asap Rocky, and Bruce Springsteen, as well as numerous smaller independent bands.

In this video from PSFK CONFERENCE NYC, artist Steve Powers takes us through his recent public and private art projects. He explains love-letters to the neighborhoods he painted on the sides of buildings in Brooklyn. He also talks about his one-a-day art “Daily Metaltation” pieces that he paints on 8×10 pieces of metal. When you’re presented with any day you’re presented with a blank slate he says and as an artist its his job to find some form and boundaries and distill his experiences of the day onto that canvas.

OUTSIDE IN is a celebratory and historical look at street art and graffiti through the lens of the Museum of Contemporary Art’s groundbreaking exhibition Art in the Streets. The film features renowned artists Shepard Fairey, Lee Quiñones, Swoon, Futura, Mister Cartoon, Revok, Martha Cooper, Invader to name a few. Director Alex Stapleton (Corman’s World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel) documents the artist’s creative process, their pitfalls with the law, the poetic impermanence of their craft and the artists’ evolution from the back seat of a cop car to the walls of a well-respected institution. Filmed at The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (MOCA) in conjunction with the exhibition Art in the Streets.

Ogilvy & Mather New York and Joshua Liner Gallery unveil a series of commissioned murals by celebrated artist Stephen Powers that reinterpret the words and quotes of agency founder David Ogilvy. Power’s bold graphic style, reminiscent of vintage advertising illustrations puts a unique emphasis on famous Ogilvy sayings and transforms them into actionable words designed to inspire the viewer. Painted in bright colors on the North stairwell of the agency’s headquarters office, the murals run from the first to the 11th floor of the office building. The murals are being unveiled to coincide with the 100th birthday of David Ogilvy, one of the most influential and important figures in modern advertising.
